Want help applying this directly to your Shopify or WooCommerce store? That’s what a 1-on-1 working session is for.
I’m going to show you how to get your Shopify or WooCommerce store inside 45 million AI shopping sessions, for free, in about five minutes. You’ll get a copy-pasteable checklist that details exactly how to optimize your products so they show up in Perplexity’s AI-driven search results.
Perplexity just made its Merchant Program completely free—no listing fees, no commissions. This is a direct shot at platforms like ChatGPT that were charging fees for in-chat checkout. The catch? Product pages alone don’t get cited. You win by creating the buying guides and comparison content Perplexity’s AI wants to find. Here’s how I do it.
What is the Perplexity Merchant Program?
The Perplexity Merchant Program is a free platform that allows e-commerce stores to list their products directly within Perplexity’s AI search and shopping results. Merchants connect their product feed, making their inventory discoverable to Perplexity’s 45 million users. The program costs nothing to join and charges zero commission on sales, and includes features like a performance dashboard and access to the “Buy with Pro” one-click checkout system.
The Perplexity Optimization Checklist I Use — Copy It Right Now
This is the checklist I use to prepare a client’s store for Perplexity. It focuses on two areas: completing the product data feed, which is a direct ranking signal, and creating the types of content that earn citations at a much higher rate than standard product pages. Getting both right is the key to visibility in AI shopping results.
# Perplexity AI Shopping Optimization Checklist
## Part 1: Product Feed Completeness (Table Stakes)
Ensure every product in your feed has these fields fully populated:
- [ ] **Product Title:** Be specific. "Men's Waterproof Trail Runner" not "Running Shoe".
- [ ] **Detailed Description:** 500+ words. Use natural language to answer common questions.
- [ ] **High-Res Images:** At least 5 images per product, including in-context/lifestyle shots.
- [ ] **Accurate Price:** Including currency. Required.
- [ ] **Availability:** In stock, out of stock, preorder. Required.
- [ ] **GTIN/UPC:** Your product's unique barcode. Critical for matching.
- [ ] **Brand Name:** Required.
- [ ] **Product Category:** Use Google's Product Taxonomy.
- [ ] **User Reviews/Ratings:** If you have them, include them. This is a major trust signal.
## Part 2: Citation-Worthy Content Templates (The Multiplier)
Create content using these formats on your blog or resource center.
### Buying Guide Template:
- **H1:** How to Choose the Best [Product Category] in 2026
- **Intro:** Answer the core question directly. What's the most important factor?
- **H2:** Top 5 [Product Category] Compared
- **H2:** Key Feature to Look For: [Feature Name]
- **H2:** Who is [Your Product] Best For?
- **H2:** FAQ about [Product Category]
### Comparison Page Template:
- **H1:** [Your Product] vs. [Competitor Product]
- **Intro:** A summary table comparing key specs (Price, Core Feature, Warranty, etc.).
- **H2:** Performance: Where [Your Product] Wins
- **H2:** Design & Usability: A Head-to-Head Look
- **H2:** The Final Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?
### FAQ Page Template:
- Create a dedicated FAQ page for your main product category.
- Use question-style H2s for each entry (e.g., "How long does the battery last?").
- Provide direct, 40-60 word answers.
- Add `FAQPage` schema markup to the page.
I use this checklist as the foundation for any store’s agentic commerce strategy. The product feed gets you in the game. The content—especially buying guides and comparisons—is what makes Perplexity’s AI choose your store as the authoritative source to cite in an answer.
[Your Store] --> [Product Feed + Buying Guides] --> [Perplexity AI] --> [45M Shoppers]
Here’s Exactly How I’d Do This
My process for getting a store live on Perplexity is straightforward and takes less than an hour for the initial setup. The first two steps take about five minutes, and the real work is in optimizing the feed and content, which is an ongoing process. The goal is to get indexed immediately and then build authority over time.
- Sign up for the Merchant Program. I’d go to Perplexity’s merchant hub and create a free account. It’s a simple form that asks for basic store information. There’s no approval process or waiting period.
- Connect the product feed. For a Shopify or WooCommerce store, this is usually done with a product feed app that generates a URL. I’d paste that URL into the Perplexity merchant dashboard. Perplexity will start ingesting the products immediately.
- Audit the top 10 products. Using the checklist above, I’d go through my top 10 best-selling products and make sure every field is perfect. I’d focus on writing detailed, helpful descriptions that go beyond the manufacturer’s spec sheet.
- Write one buying guide. I’d identify the most common research question my customers have and write one definitive buying guide using the template. This single piece of content can become a major source of AI-driven traffic, as I detail in my guide to agentic commerce.
What this changes for designer-run agency work
This shift to AI-driven shopping changes the value proposition for e-commerce site builds. Success is no longer just about a beautiful product page, but about building a content architecture that AI agents trust and cite. For agencies, this moves the work from one-off design projects to ongoing content and data strategy retainers.
| Dimension | Old Way (E-commerce SEO) | New Way (Agentic Commerce AEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Traffic Source | Google search results linking to a product page. | AI answers that cite your content and link to your product. |
| Key Content Asset | The product detail page (PDP). | Buying guides, comparison pages, and FAQs. |
| Merchant Cost | Pay-per-click ads, marketplace commissions. | Free to list (Perplexity), cost is content creation. |
| Core Skill | Keyword research and on-page SEO. | Structured data optimization and authority-building content. |
The job is no longer just to make the product look good. The job is to make the store the most helpful, authoritative source of information about the product category. That’s a bigger, more valuable service to sell.
My $0.02 — How I’d roll this out
If a client asked me to get their store optimized for Perplexity, I’d propose a simple three-day sprint. This isn’t a massive overhaul. It’s a focused effort on the 20% of work that will drive 80% of the initial results from AI shopping channels. It’s a fast, tangible win.
Day 1 — Connect and Audit. I’d get them signed up for the free Merchant Program and connect their product feed. That takes minutes. The rest of the day is for auditing their top 20% of products against the feed checklist. I’d clean up titles, expand descriptions, and identify missing GTINs. No content writing yet, just data cleanup.
Day 2 — Ship One Buying Guide. I’d work with the client to identify the single most important pre-purchase question their customers have. Then I’d write and publish one definitive, 2000-word buying guide on that topic, using the template from the checklist. I’d link out to their own product pages where appropriate. This one asset becomes the citation target.
Day 3 — Build a Comparison Page. I’d pick their flagship product and their biggest direct competitor. I would build a simple, honest comparison page using the template. A table of specs, a few paragraphs on key differences, and a clear verdict. This directly targets high-intent shoppers who are in the final stages of making a decision.
FAQ
Is the Perplexity Merchant Program really free?
Yes. There are no fees to list products and Perplexity takes zero commission on sales made through its platform. This is a key differentiator from other platforms that have explored in-chat purchasing, some of which charged transaction fees.
What is ‘Buy with Pro’ and does it cost me anything?
The ‘Buy with Pro’ feature is a one-click checkout for Perplexity Pro subscribers. It includes free shipping on all orders, which is funded entirely by Perplexity, not the merchant. It’s an incentive for users to subscribe to Perplexity and a benefit for merchants who are part of the program.
Does this only work for physical products?
Currently, the Perplexity Merchant Program is optimized for physical goods with standard product feeds (e.g., from Shopify, BigCommerce, or WooCommerce). It is not designed for digital products, services, or B2B sales that require custom quotes.
How is this different from Google Shopping?
Google Shopping lists products in a dedicated tab and in ad carousels. Perplexity integrates products directly into conversational AI answers. A user asking “what’s the best tent for backpacking” might get an answer that cites your buying guide and features your recommended tent with a buy button.
Do I need a developer to set this up?
No. For most stores on platforms like Shopify, you can generate a product feed URL using a free app. The entire setup process involves copying and pasting that URL into your Perplexity merchant dashboard. No coding is required.
What content gets cited most by Perplexity?
Independent analysis shows that buying guides, comparison articles, and comprehensive FAQ pages are cited at a significantly higher rate than individual product pages. The AI prioritizes content that helps users make a decision, not just content that describes a product.
How long does it take to see results?
After you connect your product feed, your products can start appearing in results within 24-48 hours. Seeing your content cited in answers depends on Perplexity’s crawlers finding and indexing it, which can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
