What’s in this article

  • What Claude Design does — generates prototypes, decks, one-pagers from a chat.
  • The headline reframed — what got replaced and what didn’t.
  • Where Claude Design beats Figma and Canva, and where it doesn’t.
  • The 4 use cases that justify a Claude Pro subscription on this alone.
  • How I’d actually use this in my own design workflow.

I’m Mike Kwal. I’m a designer using Claude Design every day. The “Claude replaced your designer” headline is clickbait. The real story is more interesting.

What just happened

Anthropic launched Claude Design for Pro and Team subscribers. The pitch: describe what you want — a prototype, a pitch deck, a one-pager, a brand identity — Claude builds the visual. You refine it by chatting. Export to PDF, hosted URL, or Canva.

It’s free for anyone with a Claude Pro plan. No separate subscription.

Why this matters for designers

Three honest takes that don’t fit on a Twitter headline.

The cheapest design work just got commoditized. “Make me a deck for my Tuesday pitch” or “I need a one-pager for this product launch” or “give me a basic landing page mockup.” This work used to fund freelance designers’ rent. Claude Design does it in 90 seconds. The work isn’t gone — the pricing is.

The middle and top of the design market got more valuable. Brand systems. Custom design languages. Specific aesthetic identity. AI doesn’t replace these. It makes them more visible by clearing out the cheap-mockup floor that confused buyers. Clients who used to pay $500 for a generic deck now pay $5000 for a real brand system.

Designers who use AI win over designers who fight it. I’m in the “use AI as leverage” camp. Claude Design speeds up my own first drafts. The polish layer is still my work. The brand layer is still my work. The strategic narrative is still my work. AI handles the boring 80%, I handle the valuable 20%.

What got replaced: generic layouts and stock-photo-driven mockups. What’s still ours: brand systems, taste, strategic narrative, custom illustration, motion design, anything that requires judgement.

My $0.02 — How I’d actually use this

The four ways I use Claude Design every week in my own studio.

Use 1: First-draft layouts before opening Figma. Instead of starting on a blank Figma canvas, I prompt Claude Design with three layout directions for a hero block. “Generate three homepage hero options for a [client industry] site. Use [reference brands] as style cues.” I pick the closest one and import the layout reference into Figma. The blank-page tax is gone.

Use 2: Pitch decks before sales calls. Used to spend 90 minutes on a quick prospect deck. Now I prompt Claude Design with the pitch outline, get a clean 7-slide deck in 5 minutes, swap in my brand layer (colors, fonts, logo), and ship. Total time: 20 minutes. Quality: identical.

Use 3: Variant generation in late-stage work. When I’m in late-stage Figma and need 10 variations of a hero block to A/B test, Claude Design churns them out faster than I can. I import the best 3 back into Figma for refinement.

Use 4: Internal communication. Pitch decks for internal team alignment, status reports for clients, slide backgrounds for workshops. None of these need to be brand-perfect. Claude Design is the default.

What I’d not use it for: anything shipping under a client’s brand to their customers. The brand layer requires an actual designer’s eye. AI defaults are too generic for the customer-facing work where brand consistency matters.

The bigger lesson: Claude Design didn’t kill Figma. It killed the cheapest tier of design work. For designers in the cheapest tier, that’s bad news. For designers who can do real brand work, taste-driven aesthetic decisions, custom illustration — the floor just rose. Your work is more valuable, not less, because the cheap stuff is now free.

FAQ

Is Claude Design free?
Bundled with paid Claude plans (Pro, Team, Enterprise). Free Claude.ai users get web access only.

Can I export to Figma?
Indirectly — export to PDF or hosted URL, then reference in Figma. No native Figma plugin yet.

Does it replace Canva?
For quick decks and social cards, mostly yes. Canva still wins for template libraries and brand kits at scale.

What about clients who want hand-designed work?
Sell them hand-designed work. Charge accordingly. AI lowering the floor doesn’t lower your ceiling.

Is the output good enough to ship?
For internal use, yes. For brand-perfect customer-facing work, no — apply your own polish layer.
