You can rank #1 on Google and be almost invisible to ChatGPT. This isn’t a theory anymore. If your site is optimized for one type of AI search, you’re likely missing the other half of the traffic. I’m going to give you the exact two-track audit checklist I use to fix this for my clients.

A new study just confirmed that Google AI Overviews and Perplexity rely heavily on traditional SEO rank, while ChatGPT prioritizes ‘entity authority.’ They use different logic to decide who to cite. This post is the playbook for winning on both tracks at once.

What is a Two-Track AEO Audit?

A Two-Track AEO Audit is an optimization process that treats rank-based AI engines (like Google AI Overviews) and entity-based AI engines (like ChatGPT) as separate targets. It involves running two distinct checklists: one focused on on-page SEO signals and structured data, and another focused on off-page brand authority and entity recognition. This dual approach addresses the different citation logic used by today’s leading AI platforms.

The Two-Track AEO Audit Checklist I Use — Copy It Right Now

This is the asset that changes how I scope AEO work. It splits the audit into two parallel streams, making it clear where a site’s visibility gaps are. One side is classic technical SEO beefed up for AI. The other is closer to digital PR and brand strategy. You need both to win citations consistently across all major AI engines.

# Two-Track AEO Audit Checklist (v1.0)

## Track 1: Google AI / Perplexity (Rank & Structure)

- [ ] **Top-10 Rank:** Does the page rank in the top 10 for the target query?
- [ ] **Schema Markup:** Is correct, validated Schema.org markup present (Article, FAQPage, HowTo)?
- [ ] **FAQPage Schema:** Is there a FAQ block with valid FAQPage schema?
- [ ] **HowTo Schema:** For instructional content, is HowTo schema used?
- [ ] **E-E-A-T Signals:** Is there a clear author bio, byline, and "last updated" date?
- [ ] **Internal Linking:** Does the page link to/from relevant hub pages?
- [ ] **Page Speed:** Do Core Web Vitals pass?
- [ ] **HTTPS:** Is the site secure?
- [ ] **Author Pages:** Does the author have a dedicated, schema-marked-up page?
- [ ] **About Page:** Does the About page contain clear entity data (address, mission)?
- [ ] **NAP Consistency:** Is Name, Address, Phone consistent across the web?
- [ ] **Sitemaps:** Are XML sitemaps submitted and error-free?
- [ ] **Answer-First Content:** Does the page provide a direct answer in the first 30%?

## Track 2: ChatGPT (Entity & Authority)

- [ ] **Wikipedia Page:** Does the brand/author have a Wikipedia page?
- [ ] **Authoritative Mentions:** Is the brand mentioned in top-5 industry publications?
- [ ] **Brand Name Consistency:** Is the brand name used identically across all web properties?
- [ ] **Organization Schema:** Is there `Organization` schema with `sameAs` links to social profiles?
- [ ] **Google Knowledge Panel:** Does the brand have a claimed Google Knowledge Panel?
- [ ] **Crunchbase/LinkedIn:** Are company profiles complete and updated?
- [ ] **Press Releases:** Have any releases been picked up by authoritative news wires?
- [ ] **Wikidata Entry:** Does a Wikidata entry for the brand/author exist?

I run this checklist for every new AEO client. It immediately shows them why their expensive SEO efforts might not be translating into ChatGPT visibility.

Here’s Exactly How I’d Run This Audit

Running a two-track audit is a mix of automated tools and manual review. The first track is mostly technical and can be done with standard SEO software. The second requires more strategic, qualitative analysis. I break the process down into four concrete steps that can be completed in a single afternoon.

  1. Run the Google AI / Perplexity Track. This is the easy part. I use a tool like Ahrefs or SEMrush to check keyword rankings. I use Google’s own Rich Results Test to validate all schema markup. I run a Lighthouse report in Chrome DevTools to check Core Web Vitals. This gives me a clear technical score for Track 1.
  2. Investigate the ChatGPT Track. This is manual work. I perform specific Google searches like `”[Brand Name]” -site:[brand.com]` to find external mentions. I search for the brand on Wikipedia and Wikidata. I check for a Google Knowledge Panel by searching the brand name. This process is less about a score and more about collecting evidence of authority.
  3. Create the Two-Column Report. I put the results in a simple two-column document or slide. Left side: Google AI Track checklist, with green checks and red Xs. Right side: ChatGPT Track checklist. This visual makes the gaps immediately obvious to a client.
  4. Build the Priority Roadmap. Based on the report, I create a list of action items. If Track 1 is weak, we focus on technical SEO and structured data. If Track 2 is the problem, the plan involves digital PR, content partnerships, and building out social and directory profiles. This becomes the foundation of the monthly retainer.

What This Changes for Agency AEO Services

The discovery that AI engines use different citation logic creates a new, more valuable service for agencies to sell. It moves the conversation beyond simple rankings and into true digital authority. We’re no longer just doing ‘SEO’; we’re managing a brand’s comprehensive AI visibility, which requires a broader skillset and justifies a higher price point.

Dimension Old Way (Unified AEO) New Way (Two-Track AEO)
Deliverable A single SEO audit report focused on rank. A two-part visibility report: Rank Readiness + Entity Authority.
Key Metrics Keyword position, organic traffic. Keyword position AND share of AI citations, brand mentions.
Required Tools SEMrush, Ahrefs, Google Search Console. All of the above, plus tools for PR monitoring and brand tracking.
Client Conversation “We’ll get you to rank higher on Google.” “We’ll make you the cited source on Google AI *and* ChatGPT.”

When I show a client this table and the audit checklist, the value of the work becomes self-evident. It’s a clear upgrade from what a traditional SEO agency offers. It also protects them from the frustration of ranking well but seeing competitors cited in AI answers.

My $0.02 — How I’d Roll This Out

This isn’t just a technical process; it’s a business development tool. If I were running an agency, I’d use this two-track finding to start new conversations with existing and potential clients. Here is the three-day plan I’d use to turn this insight into a new service offering.

Day 1 — Audit your top 5 clients for free. I’d run the two-track audit on my best clients’ sites without telling them. I’d create a simple one-page report for each, showing their scores on both tracks. This gives me real, tangible data to use in my pitch, showing them a specific, high-value problem they didn’t know they had.

Day 2 — Schedule the “AI Visibility Review” meetings. I wouldn’t call it a sales pitch. I’d email those five clients and say, “I found something interesting about how your brand appears in AI search that I think you need to see.” In the meeting, I’d walk them through the two tracks and show them their report. The goal is to educate, not to sell.

Day 3 — Propose the “AI Visibility Retainer.” After showing them the problem, I’d present the solution: a new monthly retainer focused on closing the gaps. I’d price it 20-30% higher than my standard SEO retainer because it includes the ‘entity authority’ work, which is closer to digital PR. Most clients who see the gap will understand the need to fix it.

FAQ

What’s the main difference between how Google AI and ChatGPT find sources?
Google AI Overviews and Perplexity heavily weigh traditional SEO ranking signals; a top-10 Google rank is a strong predictor of being cited. ChatGPT, however, prioritizes entity authority, relying more on signals like Wikipedia mentions, consistent brand presence across the web, and citations from other trusted domains.

Why does my site rank on Google but not get cited by ChatGPT?
This is the classic symptom of having strong on-page SEO (Track 1) but weak entity authority (Track 2). Your site has all the technical signals Google’s crawler looks for, but your brand hasn’t established enough off-site authority and consistent mentions for ChatGPT’s knowledge graph to see you as a definitive source.

What exactly is “entity authority”?
Entity authority is an AI’s confidence that your brand, person, or organization is a real-world, notable thing. It’s built from consistent information across multiple trusted sources. A complete Wikipedia page, a claimed Google Knowledge Panel, and mentions in major publications are all strong signals of entity authority.

How important is a Wikipedia page for AEO?
For ChatGPT, it’s critical. One study found Wikipedia was the source for nearly 48% of its top citations. While not every business can get a Wikipedia page, having one is one of the strongest possible signals for the ‘entity authority’ track. If you can’t get one, focus on getting a Wikidata entry instead.

Can I just focus on the Google AI track and ignore ChatGPT?
I wouldn’t recommend it. While Google currently drives more direct clicks, ChatGPT and other conversational AIs are a massive and growing source of user discovery. Optimizing only for Google is like optimizing a 2010 website only for desktop and ignoring mobile. You’re leaving a huge channel on the table.

Why do ChatGPT’s answers and sources sometimes change?
This happens because ChatGPT uses multiple hidden data retrieval providers. Research shows it silently routes queries through at least four different services. About 11.6% of prompts will get a different primary source when run a second time because a different retrieval pipeline was used, explaining the inconsistency some people see in testing.

Is this just a new name for traditional SEO?
No, it’s an expansion of it. Track 1 is an evolution of technical SEO. Track 2, focused on entity building, is a discipline that borrows more from digital PR and brand management. A comprehensive AEO strategy requires doing both, which is a broader scope than traditional SEO.

How long does it take to build entity authority?
Unlike on-page SEO changes that can show results in weeks, building entity authority is a long-term process. It can take 6-12 months of consistent effort in digital PR, content partnerships, and profile building to see a significant impact on your ChatGPT visibility. It’s a strategic investment, not a quick fix.
